This is a beautiful pair of Lemaire opera glasses with a handle (lorgnette style) -- it is a classic example of late 19th–early 20th century French luxury optics. These were designed not just for viewing performances—but as elegant fashion accessories for the opera or theater.

It is made of iridescent mother-of-pearl (nacre) panels over a brass metal body. The handle is not detachable. It has dual lenses with a central focusing wheel. The glasses are in excellent condition; no scratches or breaks. The Mother-of-Pearl panels have no cracks or missing pieces.

The optics are not fully functional as the view through the eyepieces is a little cloudy.

There is a single letter L engraved on the bridge between the lenses: this is typically a maker’s mark (for Lemaire Paris) or a branding element. In most cases, this is not a personalization.

The focusing wheel on the top of handle turns, but the one between the eyepieces does not move, The handle is 6” in length. Overall weight is 11 ounces.
