From the antiquarian book entitled, "A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons" by Francis Grose, first published in London in 1796, is illustrated bookplate number 11 depicting four (4) medieval helmets. Images 3 & 4 depict a helmet formerly belonging to the Duke of Monmouth who was beheaded on July 15, 1685. Bottom left, are the words "Pub March 1, 1785" for S. Hooper. Bottom right is printed "Hamilton" who I assume created the original etching. The book is filled with examples of medieval armor and weapons maintained in the Tower of London, European museums and in private collections. This is a rare bookplate from a much different era. Total plates in the book were 59.
Image imprint dimensions are approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. Simple mat and frame with glass protects the book plate. The framed dimensions are 11.5 by 14.5. The modest frame does have a few nicks, scuffs and scratches. Original brown backing paper still intact. Has a wire hanger. The item has not been examined outside of its frame. Paper has toned. Looks to have some scattered foxing. This is not a recent reproduction. No reserve. Inquiries encouraged.
This book plate was obtained from the deaccession of a Hollywood movie prop house. See label on back.
