Original 19th century French satirical lithograph titled “Clémence de Minos” from Honoré Daumier’s celebrated Histoire Ancienne series. Numbered 30 and bearing the artist’s characteristic h.D. monogram, the composition presents Daumier’s humorous interpretation of the legendary judge Minos, rendered with the wit, exaggeration, and social commentary for which the artist became renowned.

Published in Le Charivari, the influential French satirical journal, and issued by Chez Bauger, Rue du Croissant, 16, Paris. The sheet retains period publication information including Imp. d’Aubert & Cie and preserves its original journal context, a feature increasingly uncommon among surviving examples.

A wonderful example of early French satirical printmaking and nineteenth-century caricature, combining classical subject matter with Daumier’s distinctive visual humor. Highly decorative and collectible, appealing to collectors of Daumier, French prints, caricature, political satire, and Le Charivari material.

Condition:

Estate fresh and offered as found. Fold lines as issued, age toning, foxing, edge wear, creasing, and handling wear consistent with age and use. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
