OCEAN’S 11 Original Spanish One Sheet Poster (1961) Linen Backed FRANK SINATRA

An Original 1961 (from the first release of this movie in Spain) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Spanish Movie Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/4" [70 x 100 cm]

This poster was purchased from a US auction house already on linen.

Ocean's Eleven, the classic 1960 Lewis Milestone Las Vegas Nevada Rat Pack multi-million-dollar multi-casino hold-up gambling crime caper thriller ("That Big One!!"; "Nobody else would have dared it because nobody else would have the nerve!"; "You wouldn't call it a gang. Just Danny Ocean and his 11 pals - the night they blew all the lights in Las Vegas!..."; about 11 Army veterans joining together to rob five Las Vegas casinos at once!) starring Frank Sinatra (in the title role as Danny Ocean), Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford (the preceding were called "The Rat Pack" because they were real-life friends who socialized regularly), Angie Dickinson, Richard Conte, Cesar Romero, Patrice Wymore, Joey Bishop (who surprisingly was given very low billing, under that of Patrice Wymore!), Akim Tamiroff, Henry Silva, and "Guest Stars" Red Skelton, George Raft, and Ilka Chase. Note that several Las Vegas casinos agreed to allow filming within their casinos, and without that, the movie could never have been made for a reasonable price. This might seem odd, given that the premise of the movie was a massive robbery of the casinos, but it would be next to impossible to accomplish in real life, because Las Vegas is in the middle of a giant desert, so even if such a robbery could be successful, how would the perpetrators escape with the money?

The poster we have for sale is Vintage and Original and legitimate. It was printed for the release of the film (never originally intended to be sold to the direct public, but to be displayed in cinemas). Most of these posters were disposed of or returned to the NSS, meaning only limited quantities remained in circulation (and most of those are now in collectors hands). Print runs (meaning the number of posters made at the time of a films release) were much smaller than they are today. Print techniques were different and poster styles/designs and artistry were also very different. With our poster you are not only buying a WORK OF ART, you are also saving a piece of film history for future generations and giving yourself one of the BEST, SAFEST & MOST PROVEN INVESTMENTS.

Linen Backing is a long established process, used for the conservation of vintage posters, that allows them to be safely rolled for storage as well as being framed for display. It provides support for weak, acidic paper that has huge potential to be damaged by handling, due to its size, enabling easy and safe handling. During the process of linen backing it is also possible to restore areas needing touch-ins/ups, missing paper, heavy fold lines, ink marks, pin holes and tape residue.

We have always gone with the rule that we only ever have a vintage poster restored if strictly necessary. In general we have also only ever had posters backed if we have known they were intended to be framed (or the poster was in really poor condition). We would never recommend framing a valuable poster that wasn't on linen and we would also steer heavily against cheap off the shelf frames. Framing is also key when purcasing a vintage and valuable poster.

It is really important to note that having a poster linen backed isn't 'cheap' but it is an investment in the poster itself. The cost to linen back a poster usually starts at around £150 this is before any restoration work is undertaken (and you have to get it to your backer first). It may be possible to get linen backing done in the UK but from our own experience the linen & artwork is of poorer quality and the communication hasn't been anywhere near as good (which in our eyes is key to achieving the results you want on a poster).

So all of this is to say, a linen backed poster will be more expensive than one which hasn't been backed (and for good reason).
