BESCHREIBUNG

Originales Blatt mit großem Holzschnitt aus der ersten mit den Dürer-Holzschnitten aus Sebastian Brants illustrierten Ausgabe und posthum von Kaysersberg in seinen Predigten aufgegriffenen Narrenschiff-Thematik. Kaysersberg hielt eine Reihe von Predigten über Brants Narrenschiff und gehört somit zu den berühmtesten Vertretern der Narrenliteratur.

Der hier vorliegende Holzschnitt zeigt die antiken griechischen Philosophen Diogenes und Demokrit die Weltkugel haltend, im Hintergrund stehen zwei lachende Narren.

Die Holzschnitt-Illustration wurde von Albrecht Dürer gefertigt. Eingerahmt ist die Darstellung links und rechts von einer schmalen Bordürenleiste.

WISSENSWERTES ZUM WERK

Das Narrenschiff wurde das erfolgreichste deutschsprachige Buch vor der Reformation. Es handelt sich um eine spätmittelalterliche Moralsatire, die eine Typologie von über 100 Narren bei einer Schifffahrt mit Kurs auf das fiktive Land Narragonien entwirft und so der Welt durch eine unterhaltsame Schilderung ihrer Laster und Eigenheiten kritisch und satirisch den Spiegel vorhält. Das Werk wurde 1497 ins Lateinische übersetzt und durch Weiterübersetzungen in verschiedene Sprachen in ganz Europa verbreitet. Quelle: wikipedia (auszugsweise).

Die meisten Illustrationen werden dabei Albrecht Dürer zugeschrieben, weitere stammen vom sogenannten „Hainz-Narr-Meister“, dem „Gnad-Herr-Meister“ sowie anderen Holzschnitt-Künstlern.

DESCRIPTION
Original leaf with large woodcut from the first edition illustrated with Dürer woodcuts from Sebastian Brant's work and posthumously taken up by Kaysersberg in his sermons on the theme of the Ship of Fools. Kaysersberg gave a series of sermons on Brant's Ship of Fools and is thus one of the most famous representatives of fool literature.
This woodcut depicts the ancient Greek philosophers Diogenes and Democritus
holding the globe, with two laughing jesters standing in the background.
This illustration was made by Albrecht Dürer. The woodcut is framed on the left and right by a narrow border strip.

ABOUT THE WORK
The Ship of Fools became the most successful German-language book before the Reformation. It is a late medieval moral satire that presents a typology of over 100 fools on a voyage to the fictitious country of Narragonia and thus holds up a mirror to the world in an entertaining, critical and satirical way by depicting its vices and idiosyncrasies. The work was translated into Latin in 1497 and spread throughout Europe through further translations into various languages.
