An original Civil War letter written to William C. Johnston who was a Chaplain in the 13th Kentucky Infantry. He died in the service of a sickness. I think it is dated 1861 from Paint Lick Kentucky. I think this was written when he was a civilian. The writing is hard to read in areas. In one area it looks like it says,......you want my mind about the matter presented......I can not advise you to do what you propose to do I have seen so much of students, Marrying before they finished their seminary course & the evils of it......It is a thing that the matured judgement of our Board of Education is decidely against............In case you feel that the Young Lady is thrown upon your protection & that you are bound to attend to her you can have her at some good place till you can find some pleasant situation in or near Danville for her as a teacher & then send for her to come on there need be no difficulty in getting her to Ky..........We seem to be destined to have war to the knife in Ky very soon If the Disunionists get the advantage of us I do not expect to keep my family in Ky My family may leave Ky in a short time but I hope there will be no necessity.....We will have a Battle on Rock Castle River in a few weeks & I think there will be necessity for me to take a hand in it.......................You must write to your father........Tell him I am in the midst of war & that if the Southern iniquity.....Ky, I will be bank rupt & very probably killed but if we whip out the South & save Ky from Disunion I will do what I can to help his family.................... I currently have other items listed that belonged to this individual.
The letter has some wear and stain marks. The cover has some wear.
