"U.S. COAST SURVEY.....RECONNAISSANCE OF THE WESTERN COAST OF THE UNITED STATES - LOWER SHEET - SAN FRANCISCO TO SAN DIEGO"

THE SCARCE 'SEPARATE ISSUE' OF THE 'LOWER' SHEET SHOWING THE THREE MOST POPULOUS METRO AREAS IN CALIFORNIA; SAN FRANCISCO, LOS ANGELES AND SAN DIEGO

The map which has been laid down on board measures 27.75 in x 26.75 in w/ neatline measurements of 22 in x 23 in. The map has no crease or fold lines and is rendered on thick stock which indicates it was one of the special 'separate issue' copies ordered or given to maritime 'notables' (officers, ships captains, shipping executives, etc.).

This particular example was formerly on the S.S. Deroche a steamship which made runs up and down the coast of California and seemingly to Vancouver, Canada. This map was hung on the ship and was kept in storage w/ images of the ship and the ships bell which was dated 1919 when the ship was launched.

This particular map is the best early, detailed cartography done of the west coast of California post statehood in 1850. Collectors seek out examples of this 'separate' issue as the preferred example over the regular issue which is frequently plagued with fold lines, fold separations, heavy foxing, tears, and other distracting flaws. We also have seen nicely colored examples which look even more impressive on the 'separate' issue stock.

This piece must be shipped flat so shipping charges take into account that detail along with shipping insurance.
