~  AUTHENTIC EARLY WESTERN STOCK CERTIFICATE  ~

1883 THE TOTAL WRECK MINING AND MILLING COMPANY

Incorporated Under the Laws of the State of New York

Pima County, Arizona Territory Ghost Town.

The Total Wreck silver mine was discovered by John T. Dillon in 1879. Mr. Dillon was credited with naming the Empire Mountains of Arizona. While walking through the desert, Dillon noticed large quartz boulders scattered over a hillside and said it was a “Total Wreck”. Upon closer inspection, he found traces of silver in the rock.

Stock certificate issued to John H. Harvey, a wealthy Englishman who was a major investor in the mine. A small town quickly sprang up there, also named Total Wreck. The same year this stock was issued, a crew of  Mexican woodcutters employed to provide wood for the mill, were attacked by Geronimo’s Apaches. Six of the men were killed and became the first to be buried in Total Wreck’s small cemetery. Signed by J. M. Requa as president and John McMillan, secretary. It was reported to be a very rich mine.
