Vincent Van Gogh Paintings: Volume 1: Dutch Period 1881-1885 is the third volume to appear in the eight-volume catalogue raisonné of Van Gogh’s work from the Van Gogh Museum collection. It covers the same period in Van Gogh’s career as the first two volumes in the series of Van Gogh’s drawings.

Based on extensive research gathered throughout this century, including the catalogues reasons by de la Faille (1928) and Jan Hulsker (1980), this work focuses on Van Gogh's Dutch period his beginnings as a painter. A total of 44 color reproductions from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are included in the catalog section, ranging from somber still life's to landscapes to emotive character studies that include "The Potato Eaters." Two brief, prefatory essays discuss the paintings' original owner, Van Gogh's brother, Theo, and the influence of his cousin, Anton Mauve, a most underrated but important early teacher.
