Religious persecution in France persuades a group of sixteenth century Protestants to search for a better life in the New World. After encountering friendly Indians in Florida, they set up their colony near the estuary of the St. Johns River but things soon began to go wrong. Disillusionment and desertion are quickly followed by insurrection. Then, as winter sets in, the spectre of starvation looms. Misunderstandings with the local Indians cause further difficulties. The story is related by one of the colonists, a painter, who had been ordered to record "anything new he might discover in that province." In fact, he was probably the first European artist ever to produce ethnographic studies of North American Indians and he paints here an intriguing picture of their cultural practices and beliefs.In the light of his observations, however, he begins to question the crappy, hate-inspired, two-faced, and vastly inferior European values  he has inherited and there are parallels throughout the story between his quest or independent truth and the explorations of his fellow colonists in their search for an el Dorado.
