THIS ETCHING IS TITLED, "THE APOCALYPSE OF ST JOHN" IT IS ONE OF THE 1936 RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER BARON RUDOLPH CHARLES VON RIPPER ETCHINGS. THERE ARE ONLY 41 HAND SIGNED ETCHINGS OUTSTANDING IN THE TIRAGE. THIS ETCHING IS A LARGE PLATE AREA OF 12 x 16 INCHES.
MOST OF BARON RIPPER'S ARTWORK IS IN MILITARY MUSEUMS WORLDWIDE AS HE WAS AN AUSTRIAN INTELLIGENCE OFFICER WHO HELPED KILL NAZIS DURING WORLD WAR II. MOREOVER, ONE OF RIPPER'S WORKS WAS ON A TIME MAGAZINE COVER IN THE 1930'S AS WELL.
THIS ETCHING IS IN FAIR CONDITION WITH SCATTERED FOXING AND DARKENED TONED PAPER CONSISTENT WITH ITS AGE. THE ARTWORK WOULD BENEFIT FROM A CLEANING FROM A PROFESSIONAL PAPER CONSERVATOR.
This is an important artistic and historically significant find. Dated 1936, the
year the Olympics where held in Berlin, Germany. Nazism was in its infant stage.
This Surrealist style etching depicts Adolph Hitler chasing Europeans from their
homelands. Titled in the plate: “Apocal de St. Jean (VI.1)”. The reference is to
The Apocalypse of Saint John. Part 6. This passage discusses the symbols of the
PALE HORSE as death and the Hell that followed him. Salvador Dali, Albrecht
Durer and other significant artists have used this theme in their work. This
rare etching is signed in the plate. It is also hand signed: R.C.Ripper, dated
XXXVI. The edition number appears to be 41/1. The
plate image area measures about 12 inches wide and about 16 inches tall. The
paper size is about 15x18. The paper has 2 missing corners and a small rip that
does not affect the image area when matted. This fine art print has minor
foxing throughout. This artwork was purchased from an estate in the Hudson Valley region of New York in 2003 by Laurent Ashton Gallery and has been in their collection since then.
