Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon are back with their first collaboration since 2019's South of Reality, meditating on past the seven years in which AI became a public force. The album's concept draws directly from Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom's Paperclip Maximiser: an AI tasked with making paperclips that converts all available matter - humans included - in pursuit of total efficiency. Here the territory is Cliptopia, the villain is Cliptron, the protagonist is Hippard O Campus J., and salvation rests with a mythical Parrot-Ox on the Isle of Lucidity. The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy lands somewhere between Zappa's extended world-building and P-Funk's cosmology, with neither figure's institutional weight behind it, but both their instincts for absurdist allegory present.
