1854 Sermons for the People — T. H. Stockton

An original antebellum American theological volume, Sermons for the People by Thomas Hewlings Stockton, published in Pittsburgh by A. H. English & Co. in 1854. Fifth edition.

Stockton was a prominent nineteenth-century Methodist Protestant minister and preacher. The volume contains sermons addressing Christian theology, salvation, mortality, scripture, faith, and religious life, including “The Young Ruler,” “The Riches of Heaven,” and “A New-Year’s Sermon.”

Bound in period blind-stamped cloth with decorative ornamentation to the boards and spine and gilt spine lettering. The cloth has mellowed to warm brown and rose tones with age, giving the book a distinctly mid-nineteenth-century appearance.

The interior is very well preserved for its age, with pages remaining clean and legible overall. Expected age toning and occasional scattered foxing or spotting are present. The exterior shows fading, rubbing, and wear to the edges, corners, spine ends, and extremities consistent with age and use.

A handsome piece of antebellum American religious history for a collection of early American theology, Methodism, nineteenth-century sermons, religious printing, or historical books.
