Vintage Doña Rosa Barro Negro Madonna & Child Wall Plaque | Signed Oaxacan Mexican Folk Art | Pre-1980 Estate Collection

An exceptional vintage Mexican folk art wall plaque depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, handcrafted in traditional barro negro (black clay) and signed “DONA ROSA OAX, MEX” on the reverse.

Attributed to the celebrated Doña Rosa pottery workshop of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, this beautiful religious relief features sculptural hand-modeled details, a rich polished black finish, and delicate pierced floral decoration.

RARE RELIGIOUS SUBJECT & COLLECTIBLE PROVENANCE

Doña Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto (1900–1980) helped bring international recognition to the distinctive polished black pottery of Oaxaca. Her family’s workshop became renowned for its traditional craftsmanship, sculptural forms, and lustrous black ceramics.

Unlike the more commonly encountered Doña Rosa vases and pitchers, this Madonna and Child wall plaque offers an especially appealing combination of Mexican folk art, Catholic devotional imagery, and vintage artisan pottery.

Documented Ownership History

Acquired from a longtime Texas Catholic estate collection, this plaque is known to have been displayed in the original collector’s home by the late 1970s, establishing its pre-1980 provenance during Doña Rosa’s lifetime.

The piece bears the hand-incised Doña Rosa workshop inscription. Although made during the artist’s lifetime, individual authorship by Doña Rosa herself has not been independently authenticated.
