An unusual antique oak low back stool or working chair, believed to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, c.1880-1930.
A wonderfully characterful piece of British vernacular-style furniture, displaying strong Arts & Crafts influences through its substantial oak construction, clean architectural lines and distinctive pierced backrest.
The chair features a shaped, gently peaked back with three elongated vertical openings, a broad rectangular seat with moulded edging and substantial slab-form supports with shaped feet.
The oak has developed a beautiful dark patina, with pronounced grain, natural wear and surface character consistent with age.
Of particular interest is its exceptionally low, shallow and heavily constructed form. The design bears similarities to traditional Welsh slate-splitters’ stools, known as blocyn tîn, used by quarry workers in North Wales.
Although a Welsh slate-splitter’s stool is a possible attribution, its precise origin and original purpose remain unconfirmed. The piece also shares characteristics with British Arts & Crafts and traditional vernacular furniture of the period.
The underside retains interesting traditional construction details, including old iron fastenings, timber retaining blocks and evidence of historic strengthening or repairs.
An attractive and highly individual antique chair, ideal for collectors of Arts & Crafts furniture, Welsh antiques, primitive and vernacular furniture, folk art and industrial heritage.
Good antique condition with age-related wear, surface marks, patina and historic repairs or strengthening underneath. The chair retains considerable original character and has not been refinished.
