| This is a particularly attractive variation of the Baume & Mercier Ref. 38264, distinguished by its white Roman numeral dial rather than the minimalist lacquer or index-free dials also found on this reference. The bold black Roman numerals are arranged around the perimeter and framed by a chemin-de-fer railway minute track, giving the watch a strong classical character reminiscent of traditional early dress watches. The two-hand layout keeps the center exceptionally clean, while the dark hands provide excellent contrast against the white dial. The 18k yellow-gold cushion-shaped case has the softly rounded geometry typical of this vintage Baume & Mercier family, complemented here by a crown with a blue cabochon. From a watchmaker’s perspective, the Ref. 38264 is an appealing example of traditional compact mechanical construction; documented examples use the manual-winding Baume & Mercier Caliber BM775, 17 jewels. Period examples are documented from around the 1970s through the 1980s, so I would not assign SN 758716 an exact year without archival confirmation. |
