DEBS and the Poets, SIGNED by Eugene Debs! Limited edition number 297 of 500, signed in back on the limited edition card. This signed edition was published as a fundraiser for political prisoners. Hard cover, edited by Ruth Le Prade. Published and probably compiled by Upton Sinclair (a very popular socialist from the time). Dated 1920, in support of Debs and other US political prisoners, while Debs was in prison for opposing World War I. This same year, while imprisoned, Debs ran for president and received almost a million votes.
This book is comprised of tributes to Debs from such notables as James Whitcomb Riley, HG Wells, Max Eastman, Eugene Field, Carl Sandburg, John Cowper Powys and many others. George Bernard Shaw offered: “Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs.”
There is an ownership marking to the first blank page from someone who cast their "first Presidential Ballot for Eugene Debs in Nov. 1920". Another ownership marking (maybe the same person?) signed by what looks like Norma W. Jackson (1949).
This will ship with signature confirmation.
Book is as shown. Very good condition for the age. Minor page wear. Very light tanning to page edges. A bit more wear to cover edges and spine ends. Minor cover blemishes.
