Offered here is an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Small Letters variety, certified by ANACS as EF40 Details – Cleaned, certification number 7963175.

The Flying Eagle Cent marked the transition from America's large copper cents to the familiar small-cent format. Designed by James B. Longacre, the circulating series was produced for only two years, 1857 and 1858, before being replaced by the Indian Head Cent in 1859.

The 1858 issue is collected in several major varieties, including Small Letters and Large Letters. On the Small Letters variety, the A and M of AMERICA are separated, whereas the letters meet at their bases on the Large Letters variety.

The obverse features the distinctive flying eagle design, while the reverse displays ONE CENT surrounded by an agricultural wreath.

ANACS has assigned this example EF40 Details and identified it as Cleaned. It therefore does not carry a numerical straight grade.

Coin Details:

Despite the noted cleaning, the coin retains Extremely Fine-level details and represents one of the principal varieties of the final-year Flying Eagle Cent.
