You are bidding on one interesting low angle wood plane as pictured.
It is marked with "J GOBBE" on both end of the body, "J GOBBE" again on the underside of the wedge, and the iron is marked "JAMES CAM CAST STEEL" with the name partially obscured as can be seen.
James Cam made plane irons in Sheffield, England, in the late 1700's and early 1800's.
The body is about 2-3/4" in width and about 9-15/16" in length.
The iron is about 2-1/8" in width and about 5-7/8" in overall length. It is a tapered and laminated iron, although it has been sharpened enough times that only about 5/16" of the lamination remains.
The body is made in two lengthwise pieces, most of the plane in one piece, and the left side is the other piece.
It has the brass "rub rail" or trim on the right side. It could be used as a miter or shooting plane with that brass surface.
The iron sits at an angle of roughly 22 degrees up from horizontal, installed with the bevel up.
The sole has the steel covering as can be seen, which is about 1/8" thick. The mouth opening is tiny, well less than 1/16" as shown. The iron barely fits through the opening, and appears to need a different sharpening to really be functional. I tried to show the sharp edge of the iron at least flush with the sole in the pictures.
The plane weighs 2 pounds 11.7 ounces on my postal scale.
Condition is fair to good. The sole has some scattered pitting, and the iron has scattered rust and pitting, and is peened over on the upper end. The wood body and wedge show lots of wear with scratches and dings, including one round ding on each side (from a tack hammer?) of the body. One of the "ears" that holds the wedge is intact, the other is chipped but still quite functional. The brass shows wear mostly at the ends. The iron and wedge both appear to be original to the plane.
SHIPPING: 4 pounds when boxed, shipped US Postal Service Ground Advantage, insurance and tracking are included. No International shipping.
l sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools and I enjoy photography! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. So please keep watching as I have LOTS more to list!
ETHICS IN DESCRIPTIONS: I also buy for my collecting on eBay, and I have been burned too many times by misleading (duh did I forget to mention .......) descriptions, and auctions with pictures only of the left side because the right side was trashed. Life is much simpler for me if I disclose what I know or see about an item before you bid, and especially before you receive it in the mail. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. What goes around, comes around.
RETURN POLICY: I believe that if you give honest descriptions, and include enough pictures, you shouldn't need a return policy. However, that doesn't mean that I won't make an occasional mistake. Please bid with the assurance that if I have made an error in my listing, I WILL take care of you.
SHIPPING: I use the US Post Office for everything. If the value is $250 or over, I will always require a delivery confirmation signature, which eBay requires for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada. If you are in Canada, ask for what the shipping would cost, but be prepared for it to be $$$$$.
NEWSLETTER: Every Friday eBay sends out an email with my newsletter featuring 10 of my most interesting new listings. To subscribe, click on the heart symbol that is labeled SAVE SELLER, and that will automatically get you on the mailing list for the newsletters. They are free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
SELLING OUTSIDE OF EBAY: Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with eBay to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the eBay email system which they are reading? Please don't ask, the answer is no.
AUCTIONS: I won’t end an auction listing early to sell it to you directly. As a bidder, I really dislike going back at the end of an auction to bid, only to discover that the seller had ended the auction early. So I won’t do that for you, or to you.
PACKAGING: Please check my feedback -- I package well. I understand how disappointing it is to receive a purchase where the seller clearly didn't care about how it was packaged. I work to package everything with lots of protection for it, and I always use a new box or new envelope.
OFFERS: I will always consider an offer, some longer than others. Your best chance of success happens if the item has been listed for a while, your offer is reasonable (to me!), and you are a regular customer.
I am a long-time active member of the PNTC or Pacific Northwest Tool Collectors, and a long distance member of the MWTCA or Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. And once in a while I might turn up at a PAST meeting!
I hope someday I will meet some of you as we trudge the happy road of tool collecting!
