Large vintage Japanese glass fishing float, hand blown in deep olive green glass and measuring approximately 5 inches / 12.5 cm in diameter.
This is a genuine traditional fishing-net float rather than a modern decorative reproduction. The glass has the characteristic bubbles, inclusions and irregularities associated with utilitarian hand-blown fishing floats, together with a prominent sealed patch/button.
Mid Century Japanese float a Number 2 patch-mark example, made by blowing the glass into a mould.
The deep olive-green colour is very attractive and considerably darker than the pale aqua commonly encountered on Japanese floats. Authentic fishing floats were commonly produced from recycled glass and often contain bubbles, carbon specks and other inclusions like those visible here.
A substantial and highly decorative piece of genuine maritime history, ideal for a nautical collection, coastal interior or vintage glass display.
Not applicable.
Originally made as a commercial fishing-net float and now ideally suited to collecting or decorative display.
Ideal for:
No rope or netting is included.
Pre-owned vintage – Very good condition for age.
No cracks, chips or edge nibbles found.
The glass retains an excellent overall appearance with normal manufacturing irregularities including numerous bubbles, small inclusions, surface texture and imperfections associated with this type of hand-blown utilitarian glass.
There are some minor surface marks and signs of age/use, but no significant damage observed.
The sealed patch/button and number marking remain clearly visible.
Please study all photographs, including the close-ups and measurements, as these form an important part of the description.
