Col. de Basil's Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo 1936 Season at the Royal Opera House
Covent Garden
Large format, 36cm, 14.5 inches, tall, luxury programme for the 1936 June-September season at the Royal Opera House. Bound in card wraps with a grey moiré patterned dust jacket having a large colour plate laid on. Good plus condition, with some short tears to the head and foot of the spine and some creasing to the bottom edge of the front cover. The sewn text block has come partly detached from the card wraps, but there are no loose pages, and the text block is clean and bright. There are 14 tipped-in colour plates of costume and set designs, by Leon Bakst, André Derain, Picasso, Nathalie Gontcharova, Jean Hugo, M. Larionow and J. M. Sert. The programme also contains synopses of the ballets, each illustrated with a monochrome photograph, and there are numerous performer photos in monochrome. In addition there is a tipped-in colour plate advertising British Airways. There are numerous interesting period advertisements. 60 text pages, plus card stock pages with the tipped-in plates. An uncommon and beautiful survival.
