Offered here is an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, Small Letters variety, certified and graded ANACS VF35, certification number 7963169.
The Flying Eagle Cent was America's first small-size circulating cent, replacing the much larger copper Large Cent. Designed by James B. Longacre, the type had an exceptionally brief run, with regular circulation issues produced in 1857 and 1858.
Two principal lettering varieties are recognized for the 1858 issue: Small Letters and Large Letters. On the Small Letters variety offered here, the A and M in AMERICA are clearly separated at their bases, while they are connected on the Large Letters variety. PCGS lists a total 1858 circulation-strike mintage of 24,600,000 pieces across the issue.
The obverse depicts a flying eagle, while the reverse features ONE CENT within a wreath composed of agricultural products.
This example has been straight graded ANACS VF35, with no Details or problem designation.
