Offered here is an 1834 Classic Head Half Cent, certified by ANACS as AU50 Details – Graffiti, Corroded & Cleaned, certification number 8005225.

Designed by John Reich, the Classic Head Half Cent was produced from 1809 through 1836. The 1834 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with an original mintage of 141,000 pieces. The denomination itself represents the smallest face value ever regularly produced by the United States Mint.

The obverse depicts Liberty facing left, wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY and surrounded by stars. The reverse features HALF CENT within a wreath surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

ANACS has assigned this example AU50 Details, with the problems specifically identified as Graffiti, Corroded & Cleaned. It is therefore a Details-certified coin rather than a straight-graded AU50.

Coin Details:

With its relatively low original mintage and unusual half-cent denomination, the 1834 is an interesting example of early Federal copper coinage.
