This paperweight is a hand-blown creation by Harry Boyer, a prominent American glass artist who established Boyer Glassworks in downtown Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Boyer discovered his passion for glassblowing while attending Bowling Green State University in Ohio during the early 1970s, where he studied under the legendary glass pioneer Dominick Labino. He moved to Northern Michigan and opened his dedicated hot glass studio in 1984, turning it into a landmark destination where visitors could watch the grueling, high-heat fabrication process firsthand. Over the course of nearly five decades, Boyer became celebrated for transforming raw molten glass into fluid, organic forms heavily inspired by nature.
The exterior is a heavy, solid cane of clear lead-free glass shaped into an elongated egg or teardrop form. To emphasize the internal patterns and guarantee stability on surfaces.
The "Helix" Ribbon Core: The inside pattern is created using an advanced Venetian filigrana or latticino technique. Opaque white glass canes are heated, suspended within the clear molten mass, and precisely twisted on the blowpipe to create a tight, elegant spiral helix column. While Boyer is widely known for vibrant multi-colored rainbow ribbons and signature glass pumpkins, his monochromatic white-helix designs are appreciated by collectors for their clean, Scandinavian-inspired minimalism.
Boyer signed this work by using a diamond-tipped stylus to write a cursive script "Boyer" directly into the glass around the base perimeter.
