Bound in full leather. Measuring approx. 22.6cm x 17.4cm x 7.5cm. Spine is creased/scuffed, cracking and is chipped to top and bottom with loss. The rear board is chipped and bumped to edges and is cracked to spine edge (hanging on by a couple of threads). The front board is cracking to top and bottom of spine hinge. Board edges bumped and corners chipped. Rubbed, worn and little marked (see photos). Internally lacking front endpapers, engraved title page and title page (works starts at dedication). Pencil detail to inside front board and some ink letters to verso of last leaf. First few leaves are browned and are a little tatty to edges and there is a contemporary ink inscription (Les?. Russell August 1 1669) to top of first leaf present. Thumbed with some very pale toning. Contents are cracked, shaken and loosening. Numerous creases, some nicks and marginal chips. Occasional pencil marks, ink marks and smudges. Very occasional pale stained patch. Few scattered marks and spots, else overall the majority of text block remains in reasonably clean condition.

Just a year before the Restoration of King Charles II. Baxter famously wrote this book while suffering from a severe, near-fatal illness that forced him away from his public ministry, turning his own physical suffering into a guide on eternal hope and spiritual meditation. It went onto become a devotional classic, and one of the most read books of its time.

Richard Baxter (1615–1691), one of the most influential English Puritan churchmen, theologians, and writers of the 17th century. He made his reputation in the late 1630s by his ministry at Kidderminster in Worcestershire, when he also began a long and prolific career as theological writer."

  • We offer FREE UK domestic shipping, fully tracked and insured.

Packaging
All our books will be carefully and securely packaged in custom made book boxes (The majority of which are produced Carbon Neutral). We aim to send all items within 24-48 hours of payment.
