Offered here is a connected collection of eight original antique German postcards dating primarily from approximately 1905 through 1909.
Most of the cards depict Winnweiler, a historic town in the Palatinate region of Germany. The collection also includes a postcard showing the Waldkurhaus Johanniskreuz in the Pfälzerwald, or Palatinate Forest, and a Holland-America Line “Dutch Landscape” postcard.
Several cards were mailed from Germany to members of the Wittmann family in Lincoln, Nebraska. They retain their original handwritten German messages, addresses, postage stamps and postal cancellations. The repeated family names and destinations indicate that these cards were preserved together as part of the same family correspondence.
THE EIGHT CARDS INCLUDE:
1. “Gruss aus Winnweiler” panoramic town and countryside view. Written across the picture and mailed with its original stamp and postmark. 2. “Gruss aus Winnweiler” town-square or market-square scene showing buildings, cobblestone roadway and local residents. Mailed and handwritten. 3. Unusual Winnweiler-area photographic view showing a stone monument or memorial enclosed inside a tall iron protective fence. Handwriting appears on the front. 4. Second Winnweiler panoramic town view. Similar subject to Card No. 1 but with a different handwritten message and postal history. 5. Winnweiler-area street or hotel/building view showing a large multi-story structure and trees. Extensively handwritten on the front. 6. Second Winnweiler town-square view. Similar scene to Card No. 2 but carrying a different handwritten message and postal cancellation. 7. Holland-America Line “Dutch Landscape” postcard featuring a windmill and arched bridge. Extensively handwritten and mailed. 8. “Gruss vom Waldkurhaus Johanniskreuz im Pfälzerwald” postcard showing the forest resort in the Palatinate Forest. Mailed and handwritten.
The cards exhibit normal age-related wear, including toning, corner and edge wear, handwriting, postal ink, occasional marks and minor surface wear. Some corners show rounding or small bends. Please examine all photographs carefully because they are an important part of the condition description.
