REPORT
OF
THE PROCEEDINGS
OF THE
HOUSE OF LORDS
ON THE
CLAIMS TO THE BARONY OF GARDNER;

WITH AN
APPENDIX,

CONTAINING
A COLLECTION OF CASES ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE
LAW OF LEGITIMACY.

BY DENIS LE MARCHANT, ESQ.
OF LINCOLN'S INN, BARRISTER AT LAW.

LONDON:
HENRY BUTTERWORTH,
LAW BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER,
7, FLEET-STREET, NEAR TEMPLE-BAR.
1828

Large paper copy, presented by the author, to Arthur Onslow, 3rd Earl of Onslow.

Bound in contemporary plain card covers, it measures approx 16.6cm x 16.8cm x 4.3cm. As can be seen from the images the binding is worn. The card to spine covering is splitting to lower front edge, thus the front board and a section of contents to start have started to crack and strain away from text block, see images. The spine covering is chipped with small loss to the head and tail, and has a bit of a lean or twist. The extremities are rather bumped and scuffed. The title label is darkened and worn. The outer edges are untrimmed and thus are browned and thumbed. Internally, there is an armorial bookplate (Earl of Onslow) to the front pastedown, and the author's presented inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper. The contents have some scattered foxing in places throughout, with the odd mark and crease. Some leaves remain uncut to edges. The text block is starting to crack and strain in places, quite heavily near the start of the work, as mentioned above. The leaves remain largely clean and crisp. Complete.

lxiv, 505, [1] p. Complete

By Denis Le Marchant, Esq, barrister at law, who served as one of the legal counsels in the courtroom.

Le Marchant's own account of the sensational Gardner Peerage Claim, the House of Lords peerage and inheritance inquiry, regarding the rightful successor to the Barony of Gardner. It was a bitter dispute between two rival claimants centred on a question of legitimacy, as one child was born to a mother who had committed open adultery while her husband was away at sea. To settle the claim, the court called upon numerous medical experts and midwives to debate the exact biological limits of human pregnancy and gestation, making this case a landmark precedent in the English law of legitimacy.

First edition, large paper copy, presented by the author to the Earl of Onslow.
