Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual 1789 Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly's copper engraved map depicting the Isle of Mull, part of the Inner Hebrides in Scotland.
 
At the bottom left, within a circular cartouche decorated with a garland of leaves, the title and plate number "No. 589" are clearly visible.
 
Isle of Mull (Die Insel Mull): Occupies the center and right portion of the map, highlighted with green borders.
 
Small and adjacent islands: Immediately west of Mull are the small historic islands of Ulva (I. Ulva), Staffa, and Iona. Further to the left, outlined in red, are the islands of Coll and Tiree.
 
Scottish mainland: The rugged coastline of mainland Scotland is shown at the top right, with references to the areas of Inverness and Loch Aber.

From Reilly's Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt, an atlas with over 1000 maps in total. It became famous for the accuracy and high level of detail of the maps and was published in three parts between 1789 and 1806 in Vienna.

Condition: Very strong and dark impression on good paper. Paper with chains. Map old original colored. Wide margins. Small foxing and browning. Small moisture signs. Conditions are as you can see in the images. 

Mapmaker: Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (1766-1820) was an Austrian publisher, cartographer and writer. Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly was born as the son of the court master Johann Reilly. At first he worked in the civil service, but then devoted himself exclusively to geography. Between 1789 and 1806 the atlas Schauplatz der Five Parts der Welt was created , but on its 830 sheets it deals only with Europe. After the school atlas (1791–92) and the general description of the earth (3 volumes, 1792–93), he published the first (complete) Austrian world atlas with the title Grosser deutscher Atlas from 1794 to 1796 . In 1796 the adjustment series Historical and Pictorial Presentation of the Regiments of the Erzhaus Oesterreich was created , in 1799 the General postal atlas from around the world - the world's first atlas of its kind.
