'The Middle East'

Large colour-printed folding political, transport and relief map, backed on cloth, with original printed cover, 1959

A substantial contour-coloured map of the Middle East at 1:4,000,000, revised in 1959 during a period of rapid political change. Its exceptionally broad coverage runs from the Balkans and Turkey across the eastern Mediterranean, Iraq and Iran to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and south through Egypt, Sudan and the Arabian Peninsula; Hadhramaut is continued in a same-scale inset. Hypsometric tints and spot heights model the terrain, while a dense transport overlay distinguishes main and secondary roads, caravan routes, railways and oil pipelines alongside international boundaries. Published by John Bartholomew & Son at the Edinburgh Geographical Institute, the sheet captures the region during the short-lived United Arab Republic era and combines geopolitical, transport and physical-geography interest.
