One of a kind, entirely handmade cotton shawl, made from colored cottons grown in Palcazu Valley, in Peru’s Selva Central. This is a soft, substantial garment. Only the finishing thread is a commercial element, otherwise, no machines involved at any point during the process: cotton harvested by hand, spun and woven by hand, finished by hand!

The Yanesha grow colored cotton in their forest chagras. It is harvested by hand, and the seeds are laboriously removed also by hand. The cotton is spun by hand on hand spindles as shown. At this point it is sometimes dyed with plants. Other cottons grow in natural, native colored cotton (cotton which grows naturally in colors such as brown, rose, cream, and green). It is then woven on a backstrap loom. Native cotton spinning is an essential part of Yanesha culture. This shawl includes five separate native cotton colors : white, cream, rose, brown, and red. There are no plant dyes. A beautiful piece, very thin with beautiful drape.

Handmade by Jocabet Mariño Pachari, master spinner and weaver, in 2023.

This is a wonderful piece of heritage clothing, never to be duplicated exactly like this.

Dimensions: 63” x 37” not including fringe
