Your Face Tomorrow by Javier Marias Volumes 1-3
Volume 1: Fever and Spear
Jacques Deza, a Spaniard adrift in London after separating from his wife, is introduced to the enigmatic Bertram Tupra by a retired Oxford don. Tupra recruits Deza into a clandestine British intelligence organization because of Deza’s uncanny, near-supernatural ability to read people's characters and accurately predict their future behavior. Deza begins his work by secretly observing and analyzing a variety of high-profile and ordinary figures.
Volume 2: Dance and Dream
Deza continues his work deep within the intelligence service, mapping out human behavior while questioning the morality of his position. The narrative shifts dramatically when Deza accompanies Tupra to a London nightclub and is forced to witness an unexpected act of savage physical violence. This confrontation with real-world brutality deeply shakes Deza, triggering historical parallels to the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and forcing him to confront humanity's innate capacity for cruelty.
Volume 3: Poison, Shadow and Farewell
The final volume concludes Deza's descent into the world of espionage. Tupra forces Deza to watch a disturbing collection of incriminating videotapes featuring public figures engaging in horrific or deeply compromised acts. The psychological burden of these recordings acts like a literal poison on Deza's mind. Shaken by this systemic corruption, Deza eventually returns to Madrid to confront the vulnerabilities and dangers threatening his estranged wife, Luisa, testing whether he can put his predictive abilities to use in his own life
