SINGAPORE DUTCH EAST INDIES DUTCH WORLD COLONIES 1860ca HEYSE SCARCE ANTIQUE MAP

Description

Nederlandsch Indie.

Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual original colored lithographic historical Dutch school map of the Dutch East Indies ("Nederlandsch Indie").

The unique feature of this map lies in its secondary insets along the top and bottom margins. These insets do not serve to show enlarged details of the main region, but rather to map all the historic colonies, outposts, and global possessions that the Dutch Empire controlled throughout its colonial history.

Analysis of the insets and main details:

Main Map (Center): Represents the entire Indonesian archipelago, marked with colonial-era place names such as Sunda Zee (Sonda Sea), Solo Zee (Sulu Sea), Borneo, Celebes (Sulawesi), and Nieuw Guinea (New Guinea).

Top Insets:

Nederlandsch Brazilië: The Dutch colony in northeastern Brazil (New Netherlands), controlled by the Dutch West India Company (WIC) in the 17th century.

De Goudkust: The Dutch Gold Coast (in present-day Ghana), a historic trading post in West Africa.

Ceylon: Present-day Sri Lanka, once ruled by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) before coming under British control.

Bottom Panels: Nieuw Nederland (1655): New Netherland in North America, including the area surrounding present-day New York City (then New Amsterdam) along the Hudson River.

Essequibo, Demerary & Berbice: The colonial territories in the Guyana region of South America.

De Kaapkolonie (1852): The Cape Colony in South Africa, originally founded as a supply station for the VOC. Voor-Indië: The Dutch settlements and trading ports along the coasts of the Indian Peninsula (such as the Coromandel and Malabar Coasts).
