"ENNISCORTHY -- with its Norman castle is a very picturesque

part of the historic Slaney valley. This castle, which was rebuilt in 1586, is in perfect

preservation. The town was a storm centre of the insurrection of 1798, when the

castle was used as a prison. Once it belonged to the Franciscan monastery,

but after the supression of the monasteries, the castle and lands were held by

various owners, including the poet, Spenser. It is now a museum."
