Historical Context & Craftsmanship

The Yemenite Filigree Tradition at Bezalel

When Boris Schatz founded the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem in 1906, he recruited master Jewish silversmiths who had recently emigrated from Yemen. Yemenite Jewish artisans possessed centuries-old family traditions in Najm (delicate filigree) and granular metalwork. At Bezalel, these master craftsmen combined traditional Middle Eastern silverwork with modern European Art Nouveau and Zionist motifs, creating a distinct "Bezalel Style" that remains legendary among Judaica collectors worldwide.

About the Bezalel Academy (Jerusalem, c. 1906–1929)

The early Bezalel workshop period (1906–1929) represents the golden age of Eretz Israel decorative art. Objects produced during this era—especially silver Judaica, amulets, and personal smoking paraphernalia stamped with the iconic Jerusalem mark—were crafted in limited quantities and are held in museum collections globally, including the Israel Museum and the Jewish Museum in New York.
