The Report of Thomas Yeoman, Engineer,

Concerning The Drainage of the North Level of the Fens

And the Outfall of the Wisbech River

1769

During the 18th century, the British Fens faced severe, continuous flooding. The region acted as a natural basin for water descending from nine different counties. Because early engineering efforts relied on narrow, shallow, and poorly planned cuts rather than unified, deep channels, the rivers frequently choked with silt and overflowed their banks.
