Brimar sits directly behind Mullard in British valve collecting, and boxed ECC83 examples are thinning out fast. Both sections read above nominal on Ia and S.

Normally replaceable, slightly different: 12AX7A, CV492, E2164, 0AX7. Other class quality (otherwise equal): 7025, CV4004, E83CC, M8137. Multiple differences: 5751, 7729.
The ECC83 arrived in Europe in 1954 as the continental designation for the American 12AX7 and went on to become the standard high-gain double triode of the tube era, filling preamplifiers, mixing desks, guitar amplifiers and studio equipment by the million. Brimar was the valve brand of Standard Telephones and Cables, the name itself standing for British Made American Range, coined because the company built American valve types in Britain rather than following the European numbering. The brand passed to Thorn-AEI at the start of the 1960s, and cartons from that period carry the Thorn-AEI mark seen here. British ECC83 production has a following of its own, and boxed survivors in any brand are getting harder to turn up.
