Original 1916 WWI German Feldpost Christmas postcard, mailed during the First World War by a German soldier. This is a genuine period-used military postal-history piece rather than simply an unused Christmas greeting card.
The front features a decorative Christmas design with evergreen fir branches, gold-colored bells, a red wax-seal motif, and a printed parchment-style Christmas greeting. The card is printed and is not embossed.
The heading reads:
“Innige Weihnachtswünsche!”
Translation: “Heartfelt Christmas Wishes!”
The printed verse reads:
“O bringe,
Du holdes Weihnachtslied,
Allen ein friedliches,
frohes Gemüt.”
Translation:
“Oh bring,
you lovely Christmas song,
to everyone a peaceful,
joyful spirit.”
The reverse is dated 1916 and contains an extensive handwritten message in period German script. Most importantly, it is marked “Feldpost,” identifying it as military mail sent by a soldier during WWI. This wartime usage adds considerably more historical interest than an ordinary period Christmas postcard.
A great crossover collectible combining WWI German military history, Feldpost postal history and Christmas ephemera.
