SPECTACULAR MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED BOOK OF PSALMS LEAF — COMPLETE PSALM 1 “BEATUS VIR”

An extraordinary original medieval manuscript leaf preserving Psalm 1, one of the most recognizable and important passages in the entire Book of Psalms.

The text begins with the celebrated words:

“Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum…”
“Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the wicked…”

Psalm 1 forms the majestic opening to the Psalter and contrasts the destiny of the righteous with that of the wicked.

One of its most beautiful passages also appears here:

“Et erit tamquam lignum quod plantatum est secus decursus aquarum…”

“He shall be like a tree planted beside running waters…”

The manuscript is especially striking for its large illuminated “B” beginning BEATUS VIR, accompanied by elaborate medieval pen flourishing, vivid red and blue initials, colored line decoration, and finely executed Gothic script.

The large Beatus initial is one of the classic visual features associated with medieval Psalters, traditionally marking the opening of Psalm 1 and the beginning of the Book of Psalms.

“Quoniam novit Dominus viam iustorum, et iter impiorum peribit.”
