An original 1710 edition of Pastoral Poems by Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657–1757),
accompanied by his important Treatise on the Nature of the Eclogue and his
Digression on the Ancients and the Moderns. Fontenelle was one of the major intellectual figures
of the early Enlightenment, and this volume combines literary poetry with critical essays on classical
and modern literature. The work is especially notable for its connection to the famous Quarrel
of the Ancients and the Moderns, the major intellectual debate over whether contemporary writers
and thinkers could equal or surpass the achievements of classical antiquity.
