Yevgen Nikiforov – Decommunized: Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics

Original 2017 first edition, published jointly by DOM Publishers, Berlin and Osnovy Publishing, Kyiv.

Out-of-print large-format photographic study documenting the monumental mosaics of Soviet Ukraine.

Photographer Yevgen Nikiforov spent three years travelling throughout Ukraine, covering approximately 35,000 km and visiting 109 cities and villages in order to document more than 1,000 surviving examples of Soviet monumental art. The resulting book contains around 200 photographs of mosaics dating principally from the 1950s–1980s.

The publication has become an important visual record of Ukrainian modernist and monumental art. A number of works documented by Nikiforov were subsequently altered or demolished, making the photographs valuable records of artworks and architectural environments that no longer survive in their photographed state.
