Renascent is Durutti Column's first music in 16 years, marking shift into clean, modern electronica territory for Vini Reilly and co. It's nothing near the fizzing, tape-whispered tones of their 1980 record The Return, one of their best known; rather this "renascence" by the guitar-drums-electronics trio hears a heavy leaning on industrial beats, 'Liars' bringing self-monologuing, downtempo rap verses to a production palette recalling a heavenly match-made meeting of, say, Swallow and John Beltran, or Jah Wobble and The Streets (it's a style that goes back to artists in the orbit of On-U, Primal Scream and company - slick, bass-girded downtempo "versions" in the post-punk paradigm). It's clear the band have been paying attention to changing tastes in underground music, preferring ambient washes and ghostly, flights-of-angels chorals on the likes of 'Vapour In A Matchbox' and 'Your Shadow At Morning'.
