an very unusual, wooden statue depicting a female twin figure, known as:

Ere Ibeji 

made by a northern subgroup of the Yoruba People, the

Ilorin,  Igbomina or Ogboona People from the region between Kwara and Osun.

The Yoruba Peoples regard twins as extraordinary beings protected by Shango, the deity of thunder, they are believed to be capable of bestowing immense wealth upon their families or misfortune to those who do not honor them, twins are honored with carved memorial figures when they die. 

"Twins: double trouble, twice blessed"

This female figure is carved with a braided coiffure, small ears, open round eyes,

she has very complex facial scarification, 

a long neck, broad square shoulders, elbows slightly accentuated, hands on square hips, fingers quit rudimentary carved, just like the toes, very short legs, standing on a plinth,

 she is wearing two waist beads,

condition: firm, very nice smooth surface and patina, metal pupil pins missing, a few very slight wood cracks

age: unknown, probably mid 20th Century, 

      height: circa 24 cm / circa 9.4 inch

weight: circa 282 gr.
