"It's good music to chill out to..." Not our words, but the verdict of God himself on Vini Reilly and The Durutti Column, at least if you believe the Lord Almighty's appearance in the early morning sky above the Hacienda in the film 24 Hour Party People. Factory boss Tony Wilson backed the band from the very beginning and now, with both Factory and Wilson gone, they continue to go from strength to strength, the world taking its time in catching up with their futuristic ambient soundscapery but ultimately getting there. Renascent is their 26th album and from the eerie, resonant layers of echo swamping the hip-hop beats of 'Your Shadow At Evening' to Caoilfhionn Rose's arresting vocal contributions, this is everything you'd want from a DC album, some familiar, some nicely unexpected.
