Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual 1861 Philippe Benoist's original colored lithographic view of the city of La Rochelle, France, France.
 
The view captures with extraordinary precision the daily hustle and bustle and architecture of the Vieux Port (Old Port) of La Rochelle, France, seen from the vantage point of the once-popular Café Arrignon, located at the end of the Quai Duperré.
 
Left: In the background, the famous medieval fortifications that guard the entrance to the port stand out: the imposing Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne.
 
Foreground: A vibrant 19th-century scene showing docks populated by elegant figures and sailors, traditional moored sailing vessels, and one of the first paddle steamers, symbolizing the advance of the Industrial Revolution in maritime transport.
 
It is part of the prestigious collection of views entitled "Ports de mer d'Europe — France" (Sea Ports of Europe), clearly legible in the upper margin of the sheet. Authors: The original drawing is by French architect and draftsman Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy, while the lithographic stone version was executed by the renowned lithographer Philippe Benoist.
 
Publisher: The work was printed and marketed in Paris by the renowned publishing house Louis Turgis.

Condition: Very strong and dark impression on good paper. Sheet old original colored. Wide margins. Small foxing. Conditions are as you can see in the images. 

Engraver: Philippe Benoist (1813-c. 1905) has bbeen a French painter, draughtsman and lithographer, especially of landscape and buildings. born at Geneva, worked Paris, where a pupil of Daguerre.
 
Artist: Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy (1790-1858) has been a French lithographer, illustrator and painter. An accomplished architect and landscape painter, Chapuy is perhaps best known for his stunning lithographs. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and in 1833 won a third-class medal for his lithography.
