1848 SG 57 10d Embossed Specimen Mint Half Sheet of 12 Largest Multiple Extant
The remarkable full sheet marginal block of 12 of the 1848 10d Brown Embossed, Die I, SG 57, the largest block in private hands, wonderful fresh appearance with large margins all round and clear embossing. Overprinted Specimen with full original gum, nine stamps being unmounted. Some trivial imperfections of no consequence given the importance of this stunning and superb Exhibition item (Odd pinhole from original archive, crease at right and a light fold in margin between first and second column). Illustrated in 'The British Philatelist' (when a sheet of 24, Vol.4 p 86, 1911-12. The bottom half of 12 later cut into two blocks of six). Ex 'Koh-i-Nor' Harmers 2003. Cat. £36,000.00 as mint singles, a mint block thus would be many times that.
