'Insurance Plan of Kingston, Jamaica — Key Plan'

Charles E. Goad’s uncommon insurance plan provides a remarkably detailed picture of Kingston in December 1894. At a scale of 500 feet to the inch, the key plan plots numbered city blocks, streets, wharves, public institutions, suburbs, the race course and Kingston Harbour. Its extensive marginal notes record a population of 51,000 and describe reservoirs, water pressure, hydrants, the fire brigade, prevailing winds and ground conditions, while the legend classifies buildings by construction and insurability. Created for commercial risk assessment, Goad plans are now prized as precise records of urban form and infrastructure. This is sheet 1, the key plan, published from Goad’s London, Toronto and Montreal offices. The original pale-blue colour and fine linework remain clear and attractive.
