During World War II, the British
Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm operated nearly 2,000 Corsairs. The Royal Navy put
the Corsair into carrier operations immediately. They found its landing
characteristics dangerous. Because British aircraft carriers had lower hangar
deck heights than American carriers, the Royal Navy famously clipped 8 inches
off the outer wingtips of their Corsairs to clear the low deckheads�a
distinctive design quirk often replicated in Fleet Air Arm scale models. They
also pioneered a bulged canopy, raising the pilot�s seat and using a curved
landing approach to help pilots overcome the aircraft�s notoriously long nose
and poor forward visibility during carrier landings.
Donald J. Sheppard: The Sole FAA
Corsair Ace
- The Ace: Sub-Lieutenant (later Donald J. Sheppard)
of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve.
- The Record: He was the only Fleet Air Arm pilot to
reach ace status in the Corsair, with 5 aerial victories (plus 2 shared)
in the Pacific theater.
- He achieved his 5th kill (a Japanese Judy dive
bomber) on May 4, 1945, while flying a Corsair II
- Squadron: 1836 Squadron, operating off the carrier
HMS Formidable.
