'South Pacific Skyways to New Zealand—TEAL—Tasman Empire Airways Limited'
Newsprint advert including airline route map, 1951
Rare pre-inaugural map of TEAL's celebrated Coral Route, published shortly before the commencement of the world's most glamorous post-war air services. Appearing in the November 1951 issue of Pacific Islands Monthly, the map illustrates TEAL's existing South Pacific network together with the projected extension from Fiji via Western Samoa, Aitutaki and Tahiti, issued shortly before the proving flight in late November and the inaugural passenger service the following month. Operated by magnificent Short Solent flying boats, the Coral Route quickly became an icon of luxury long-distance travel, its leisurely island-hopping schedule and silver flying boats epitomising the romance of the South Pacific before the arrival of long-range landplanes ended the era. An evocative and historically important contemporary map documenting the route at the very moment of its conception, before the Coral Route had entered popular legend.
