Good condition with mottling to the cloth, short repair to the upper back hinge, front endpaper repaired along the hinge, back endpaper cracked along the hinge, but the binding is stable. Title and dedication pages have been roughly opened, leaving a ragged edge. The first folding map has been repaired (formerly torn in two along the fold, with no losses).The text block is mainly clean and bright, with occasional light marks. Illustrated with two folding coloured maps and 8 other maps, and 51 engraved illustrations, some full-page, others within the text. A very nice early edition of this famous book, dedicated to Charles Darwin. 19cm, 7.5 inches, tall, xvi, 653 pages, plus 2pp publisher's advertisements.
