Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual original lithographic map documenting the route and meteorological observations of the Imperial Austrian Navy frigate Novara during a typhoon in the South China Sea.
Event: The typhoon sent by the ship between August 18 and 19, 1858.
Context: The voyage was part of the famous Novara Expedition (1857–1859), the first and only circumnavigation of the globe undertaken by the Austro-Hungarian scientific navy.
Geography: The map shows the island of Formosa (Taiwan), the Miyako-jima Islands, and the Ryu-Kyu archipelago (referred to as the "Liu-Tschu Islands").
Graphic elements: The complex network of red and black lines traces the frigate's route, wind changes, and the estimated path of the center of the tropical cyclone.
